Bleeding Gums & Gum Disease

What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?

Gingivitis is early gum inflammation that causes redness and bleeding. Periodontitis is the advanced stage, when infection damages the bone that holds your teeth in place.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Gingivitis can usually be reversed with a professional cleaning and good home care. Periodontitis cannot be fully reversed, but treatment stops it from getting worse and protects your teeth.

Is a deep cleaning painful?

Scaling and root planing is done with local anaesthetic, so most patients feel very little. Your gums may be a little tender for a few days afterwards.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Most patients do well with a cleaning every six months. If you have gum disease, we may recommend visits every three to four months to keep it under control.

Do you direct bill insurance and the CDCP?

Yes. Cleanings and gum therapy are billed according to the BCDA Fee Guide, we direct bill most plans and we welcome Canadian Dental Care Plan patients.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Can I preview my new smile before treatment starts?

Yes. For veneer and multi-crown cases we do a custom wax-up of your new smile before starting. For Invisalign we use an iTero scanner to create a virtual image of your teeth and show you immediately what your after will look like.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. We offer a two-year warranty on fillings, crowns, bridges and veneers. If there is a chip or fracture we will redo the work at no cost to you.

Do you bill insurance directly?

We claim insurance directly whenever we can, and we always charge only the BC Fee Guide for general dentists.

Can I be sedated for treatment?

We don't offer treatment under general anesthetic, but we do offer conscious oral sedation to help you feel relaxed during your dental treatment.

Dental Bonding

How long does dental bonding last?

Bonding usually lasts several years with good care. It can chip or stain over time, but it is easy to repair or refresh.

Does bonding hurt?

Most bonding needs no freezing at all because little or no enamel is removed. It is one of the most comfortable cosmetic treatments.

Can bonded teeth be whitened?

Composite does not change colour with whitening. If you would like whiter teeth, we recommend whitening first and then matching the bonding to your new shade.

Bonding or veneers: which is better?

Bonding is quicker and more conservative, ideal for small repairs. Veneers last longer and suit bigger changes in shape or colour. We will explain both at your consultation.

How do I care for bonded teeth?

Brush and floss as usual, avoid biting hard objects, and limit coffee, tea and red wine to help the bonding keep its colour.

Dental Bridges

How long does a dental bridge last?

With good brushing, flossing under the bridge and regular checkups, a bridge can last many years. We check it at every visit.

Is getting a bridge painful?

The teeth are numbed before any preparation, so most patients feel little more than pressure. Mild sensitivity afterwards usually settles within a few days.

Should I choose a bridge or an implant?

An implant replaces the root and does not rely on neighbouring teeth, while a traditional bridge uses them for support. We will explain the pros, cons and costs of each for your situation.

How do I clean under a bridge?

Brush twice a day and use floss threaders, a water flosser or small interdental brushes to clean under the replacement tooth. Our hygienists will show you how.

Is a bridge covered by insurance?

Many plans cover part of the cost of a bridge. We direct bill most insurance plans, follow the BCDA Fee Guide and welcome Canadian Dental Care Plan patients.

Dental Cleanings & Hygiene

Do dental cleanings hurt?

Most cleanings are comfortable and painless. Patients with sensitive teeth or gum inflammation may feel mild discomfort, which our team works to minimize.

Can cleanings remove stains?

Professional cleanings often remove surface stains from food, beverages and tobacco. More significant discolouration may benefit from professional teeth whitening.

Why can't I just brush and floss at home?

Brushing and flossing are essential, but they cannot remove hardened tartar. Professional cleanings remove the buildup home care can't address.

How often should children get cleanings?

Most children should visit every six months for preventive exams and cleanings, though some may need more frequent care.

Dental Concerns

How do I know if my tooth pain is an emergency?

Pain that keeps you awake, swelling in the gums or face, a fever, or a tooth that is knocked out or badly broken needs same-day care. Call our Fleetwood or Newton clinic and we will see you as soon as possible. Mild, on-and-off sensitivity should still be checked, so book an exam within the week.

Are dental X-rays and 3D scans safe?

Yes. Our digital X-rays use up to 80% less radiation than traditional film, and we only recommend a 3D CBCT scan when it changes how we plan your care.

What if I am not sure what is causing my symptoms?

That is exactly what a diagnostic exam is for. Book an evaluation and we will examine, image and explain before any treatment is recommended.

Do you accept my insurance and the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

We direct bill most insurance plans at both clinics and welcome CDCP patients. See our Insurance & Coverage page or ask our team before your visit.

Can I be seen the same day?

Both Surrey clinics keep same-day appointments for urgent concerns. Call as early in the day as you can and we will fit you in.

Dentures

Which type of denture is right for me?

It depends on how many teeth are missing and your goals. At your consultation we'll walk through full, partial, implant-supported and immediate options with clear pricing for each.

Will my dentures look natural?

Yes, computer-aided design creates dentures that blend with your facial structure and look genuinely lifelike.

How long until I get my dentures?

Our digital workflow means fewer visits and quicker turnaround than traditional methods, and immediate dentures can be planned for the same day.

Emergency Dentistry

Can I really be seen the same day?

Generally, we allow emergency patients to come in right away during office hours. Although there may be a bit of a wait, this ensures you will be seen as soon as possible.

What if my emergency happens after hours?

If you call our office after hours, the voicemail provides the dentists' personal phone numbers. Leave a message and the dentist will call you back as soon as possible.

Will you explain what's happening?

Yes, your emergency dentist explains what's happening during the exam and gives you a summary of the findings. You are a full partner in your oral health care, and we have great digital tools to make sure you understand what's happening in your mouth.

Emface

What is EMFACE?

EMFACE is a non-invasive treatment that combines radiofrequency and HIFES energy to tone facial muscles and build collagen. There are no needles and no downtime.

Is EMFACE a dental treatment?

At Green Apple Dental we use EMFACE as part of comprehensive care. Balancing the jaw and facial muscles supports TMJ relief and gives cosmetic treatments a healthier foundation.

How long does a session take?

Each session takes about 20 minutes, and you can return to your normal day straight away.

Does EMFACE hurt?

Most patients describe a warm sensation and muscle contractions. There are no needles and no recovery time.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your goals and your jaw and muscle health. We will recommend a plan at your consultation.

Facial Aesthetics

Why does a dental clinic offer facial aesthetics?

Because the face and the smile are one system. Our dentists treat the jaw, muscles and teeth every day, and facial aesthetics is the natural finishing step of that care. Aesthetic treatments here are always coordinated with your dental health.

What is Emface?

Emface is a non-invasive treatment that combines radiofrequency and HIFES energy to tone facial muscles and build collagen. No needles, no downtime, sessions of about 20 minutes. At Green Apple Dental it also supports TMJ relief by relaxing overworked jaw muscles.

Do I need to be a dental patient to book aesthetics?

No, but every aesthetics patient receives a smile and facial assessment first, because the healthiest and most natural results come from treating the foundation before the surface.

Will the results look natural?

Yes. Our approach is conservative by design. We plan every treatment digitally, refine in stages and never overdo it.

First Dental Visit

What age should my child first visit the dentist?

By their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing.

How long does a first dental visit take?

Most first visits are relatively short and focused on helping your child feel comfortable while completing a gentle examination and discussing preventive care.

Will my child receive a cleaning during the first visit?

Depending on your child's age, comfort level and oral health needs, a gentle cleaning may be performed during the appointment.

What should I bring to the appointment?

Any relevant medical information, insurance details, and a list of questions you may have about your child's oral health.

What if my child is nervous?

That's completely normal. Our team is experienced in helping children feel comfortable and will work at a pace that helps your child feel safe and relaxed.

Fluoride Treatment

Are fluoride treatments safe?

Yes. Professional fluoride treatments have been safely used for many years and are widely recommended by dental professionals to help prevent tooth decay.

How long does a treatment take?

Most fluoride applications take only a few minutes and can easily be completed during a routine dental visit.

How often should I receive fluoride?

The frequency depends on your oral health needs and cavity risk. Many patients receive fluoride treatments during their regular dental checkups.

Is fluoride only for children?

No. While fluoride is especially beneficial for children, adults with cavity risk factors or tooth sensitivity may also benefit from treatment.

Free Invisalign Consult

How long is an Invisalign consultation?

Most Invisalign consultations take about 10–15 minutes and can be done by video or in person. During your consultation at our Surrey dental clinic, we review your goals and outline your personalised treatment plan.

Do I need x-rays or scans at my first visit?

In most cases, no x-rays or scans are needed for your initial Invisalign consultation. We begin by understanding your goals, and if any imaging is recommended we will review it with you and explain why it may be helpful.

How soon can I start Invisalign treatment after my consultation?

Most patients can begin Invisalign treatment within a few weeks of their consultation. Once your personalised plan is ready, your custom aligners are made and we guide you through each step to get started with confidence.

What happens during my Invisalign consultation?

We start by understanding your goals and what you would like to improve about your smile. We then assess your teeth and bite and, when appropriate, use digital scanning to show a preview of your potential results. You will also receive a clear explanation of your treatment plan, timeline and fixed cost so you can make an informed decision with no pressure.

Implant Cost

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Many plans cover part of the cost, especially the crown. We direct bill most insurance plans and can send a pre-determination so you know your coverage before treatment.

Do you accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

Yes. We welcome CDCP patients at both clinics. Coverage for implants depends on your plan, and our team will help you check what applies.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. We offer monthly payment plans and third-party financing for larger treatments like implants. Ask our team at your consultation.

Why do implants cost more than a bridge or denture?

An implant replaces the root as well as the tooth, protects the jawbone and does not rely on neighbouring teeth. Many patients find it the best long-term value.

How do I get an exact price?

Book an implant consultation. After an exam and 3D scan, we give you a written, itemized quote with no surprises.

Invisalign

Do I need X-rays or scans at my first visit?

In most cases, no. We begin by understanding your goals, if any imaging is recommended, we'll review it with you and explain why it may be helpful.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Anywhere from 6 to 18 months depending on your unique needs. Our digital 3D planning helps us predict treatment timelines accurately.

Is Invisalign painful?

The aligners are designed for comfort. Some patients feel minor pressure as teeth shift, but this is generally temporary.

How soon can I start after my consultation?

Most patients can begin treatment within a few weeks. Once your personalized plan is ready, your custom aligners are made and we guide you through each step.

Invisalign Cost

How much does Invisalign cost in Surrey?

At Green Apple Dental, Invisalign treatment is a clear, fixed cost of $4,159. This all-inclusive price covers your aligners, appointments, digital smile simulation, and final retainers with no hidden fees. Many patients also choose flexible payment plans, which can make Invisalign as affordable as $120 to $150 per month.

What is included in the cost of Invisalign treatment?

Our Invisalign treatment includes custom clear aligners, a digital 3D smile simulation, all appointments and adjustments, ongoing monitoring, any necessary refinements, and a set of final retainers. Everything is planned from the start so your treatment is predictable, efficient, and clearly outlined.

Are payment plans available for Invisalign?

Yes, we offer flexible Invisalign payment plans to make treatment more accessible. You can choose a low down payment with manageable monthly installments, and we also provide financing options. Many patients are able to start Invisalign for approximately $120 to $150 per month.

Is Invisalign covered by insurance?

Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic coverage that can be applied toward Invisalign treatment. Our team will review your benefits, help maximize your coverage, and handle the submission process to make everything as simple as possible.

Jaw Pain & Teeth Grinding (TMJ)

What causes TMJ disorders?

TMJ disorders can result from teeth grinding, jaw clenching, stress, bite misalignment, arthritis, trauma or muscle strain. Often several factors combine.

Will a night guard help my jaw pain?

Many patients feel relief with a custom night guard because it reduces pressure on the jaw joints and protects the teeth from grinding. It is usually the first step in treatment.

Is grinding damaging my teeth?

It can be. Grinding wears enamel, chips edges and can crack teeth or make them sensitive. Catching it early protects your teeth and any dental work.

When should I see a dentist about jaw pain?

Book an evaluation if jaw pain, clicking or headaches keep coming back, if your jaw locks, or if you notice worn or chipped teeth.

Is jaw pain connected to snoring or sleep apnea?

Sometimes. Grinding at night can be linked to a restricted airway. Learn more about sleep apnea and airway health .

Mercury Free Fillings

Who can benefit from mercury-free fillings?

Almost anyone with a cavity or damaged tooth, especially patients who want a safer alternative to metal amalgam, are concerned about the appearance of silver fillings, or want to replace existing ones with a natural-looking option.

Can you replace my old silver fillings?

Yes, we help patients replace old amalgam fillings with modern, mercury-free composite fillings, enhancing both the health and the appearance of your smile.

How long do composite fillings last?

Composite fillings are highly durable and long-lasting for both small and large cavities. We also offer a two-year warranty on fillings, if there's a chip or fracture we redo the work at no cost.

Missing & Broken Teeth

Can a broken tooth be saved?

Often, yes. Depending on the damage, a filling, crown or root canal treatment can save the tooth. See us as soon as possible so a small break does not become a larger one.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most adults with healthy gums and enough jawbone can have implants. If bone has been lost, bone grafting can often rebuild it. We use 3D CBCT imaging to plan every implant precisely.

Should I choose an implant or a bridge?

An implant replaces the tooth root and does not rely on neighbouring teeth, while a bridge anchors onto them. We will explain the pros, cons and costs of each for your situation.

How long do dental implants last?

With good home care and regular checkups, implants can last for many years. The crown on top may eventually need replacing from normal wear.

New Patient Exam & Check Up

What happens at my first visit?

You'll meet Dr. Cancar or Dr. Kooner, who will ask about your concerns and priorities and review your medical history. If you're taking medications, bring a list with dosages. The exam starts with a head and neck check, then we look inside your mouth and chart any existing dental work. A treatment plan is then made with your priorities in mind.

How long does the first appointment take?

The dentists like to allow an hour for the first appointment. Each patient's needs vary, so the time needed to create a treatment plan varies too. We prefer to book your cleaning after the exam is done.

Can I get my cleaning on the first visit?

If you've been seeing a dentist regularly, we can book you for a 30-minute limited exam with your cleaning on the first visit. Please let our receptionist know in advance so we can request your X-rays from your previous dental office.

Will I need X-rays?

X-rays are prescribed case by case. The dentists prefer to review your dental history and examine your mouth first. If you have recent dental X-rays, let us know when you book and we will request them from your previous dentist, usually X-rays are needed once a year.

How often should I come in?

We recommend a dental exam and cleaning every 6 months. Some patients require more frequent cleanings, improving your home routine reduces the time needed at hygiene visits.

Patient Experience

I am nervous about the dentist. Can you help?

Absolutely. Tell us how you feel and we will take things at your pace, explain each step and make sure you are comfortable throughout your visit.

Can my whole family be seen at Green Apple Dental?

Yes. We care for patients of all ages, from a child's first dental visit to adults and seniors.

Can I be seen the same day for an emergency?

Both clinics keep same-day appointments for urgent concerns. Call as early in the day as you can.

How do I book?

Book online any time, or call our Fleetwood clinic at 604-597-1311 or our Newton clinic at 604-503-1722.

Regular Checkups

How often should I have a checkup?

We recommend a dental exam and cleaning every 6 months. Some patients need more frequent visits based on their oral health.

What's the difference between a checkup and a cleaning?

A checkup is the examination, X-rays, screening and monitoring. A cleaning is the professional removal of plaque and tartar. Most hygiene visits combine both.

Will I need X-rays every time?

No, X-rays are prescribed on a case-by-case basis after reviewing your history, usually about once a year.

Restorative Dentistry

Will my restoration look natural?

Yes, crowns, bridges, veneers and dentures are colour-matched and custom-designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

I'm nervous about dental work, can you help?

We offer conscious oral sedation to help you feel relaxed during treatment, and our team will walk you through every step before we begin.

Sealants

Who should get dental sealants?

Sealants are highly recommended for children as their permanent molars emerge, usually around ages 6–12, and they're an excellent option for teens and adults who are cavity-prone or want added protection.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants can last several years with proper oral hygiene. At routine visits we evaluate their condition and reapply if necessary.

Does getting sealants hurt?

Not at all, applying sealants is quick and completely painless, with no drilling or anesthetic needed.

Are sealants covered by insurance?

Many plans cover sealants for children. We bill insurance directly when we can, at BC Fee Guide rates.

Sleep Apnea & Airway Health

Can a dentist treat sleep apnea?

Dentists trained in dental sleep medicine can provide custom oral appliance therapy for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Diagnosis comes from a sleep study, and we coordinate with your physician.

Is an oral appliance an alternative to CPAP?

For many patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance is a comfortable alternative. Your doctor and our dentists will help decide what is right for you.

Do I need a sleep study?

Yes. A sleep study confirms whether you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. We can help coordinate this with your doctor or a sleep clinic.

Is all snoring sleep apnea?

No, but loud snoring most nights, especially with gasping, breathing pauses or daytime tiredness, is worth checking.

Will my insurance help cover an oral appliance?

Some extended health plans include coverage for oral appliances when sleep apnea is diagnosed. We are happy to help you check your plan.

Sleep Apnea Therapy

Is an oral appliance as effective as CPAP?

For many patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, an oral appliance is an effective and more comfortable option. Your doctor and our dentists will help decide what is right for you.

Do I need a sleep study first?

Yes. A sleep study confirms whether you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. We can help coordinate this with your doctor or a sleep clinic.

Will the appliance affect my teeth or jaw?

Some patients notice mild jaw or tooth tenderness at first, which usually settles. We check your bite at follow-up visits and adjust the appliance as needed.

Does insurance cover oral appliances?

Some extended health plans include coverage when sleep apnea is diagnosed. We are happy to help you check your plan.

Smile & Appearance Concerns

Is professional teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Whitening supervised by your dentist is safe for healthy teeth and gums. Some patients notice temporary sensitivity, which settles within a few days.

Can crooked teeth be fixed without braces?

Often, yes. Invisalign clear aligners straighten crowded teeth and close gaps without brackets or wires. We will let you know at your consultation if aligners are right for you.

How long do veneers last?

With good home care and regular checkups, veneers can last many years. Wearing a night guard helps protect them if you grind your teeth.

Does insurance cover cosmetic treatment?

Purely cosmetic treatment is usually not covered, but parts of your plan, such as replacing a broken filling or crown, may be. We direct bill most plans and will check your coverage before treatment. See Insurance & Coverage .

Where do I start?

Book a smile consultation. We will examine your teeth, talk through your goals and explain every option, including costs, before anything begins.

Smile Makeover

Can I see my new smile before treatment?

Yes, for cases with veneers or several front crowns we do a custom wax-up of your new smile before starting. For Invisalign patients we use an iTero scanner to show you your after immediately.

What if I'm nervous about treatment?

We offer conscious oral sedation to help you feel more relaxed during your dental treatment.

TMJ & Sleep Apnea

Will a night guard help my TMJ symptoms?

Many patients experience relief with a custom night guard because it reduces pressure on the jaw joints and minimizes nighttime grinding. It is usually the first step in a TMJ plan.

How does Emface fit into TMJ treatment?

Emface tones and re-balances the muscles of the face and jaw without needles or downtime. For patients with chronic clenching, calmer muscles mean less joint strain, fewer headaches and a better foundation for any cosmetic or orthodontic work that follows.

When should I seek treatment?

Book an evaluation if you have persistent jaw pain, morning headaches, clicking or locking, worn teeth, loud snoring or unrefreshing sleep.

TMJ Treatment

Can TMJ disorders go away on their own?

Some mild cases may improve temporarily, but persistent symptoms often require professional evaluation and treatment to prevent worsening.

Can teeth grinding cause TMJ problems?

Yes. Chronic grinding and clenching place excessive pressure on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles, which can contribute to TMJ symptoms.

Technology

Is a same-day crown as strong as a lab-made crown?

Yes. CEREC restorations are milled from the same high-strength ceramics used by dental labs. Because the crown is designed from a precise digital scan, the fit is often better, which protects the tooth underneath.

Is CBCT imaging safe?

CBCT uses a very low radiation dose, comparable to a few days of natural background exposure, and we only recommend a 3D scan when it changes how we plan your treatment.

What is Emface and is it a dental treatment?

Emface is a non-invasive facial muscle therapy. At Green Apple Dental we use it as part of comprehensive care: balancing the jaw and facial muscles supports TMJ relief and gives cosmetic treatments a healthier foundation. It is coordinated with your dental plan, not offered as a stand-alone spa service.

Do both Fleetwood and Newton clinics have this technology?

Both Surrey clinics run the same all-digital workflow, including intraoral scanning, digital X-rays and CBCT imaging. Call either clinic and our team will book you at the location that suits you.

Teeth Whitening

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes! Our professional whitening treatments are safe and performed under expert supervision to ensure the best results with minimal sensitivity.

How long does teeth whitening last?

With proper oral care and lifestyle choices, results can last from 6 months to 2 years. Avoid staining foods and drinks, and maintain regular dental cleanings for longer-lasting whiteness.

Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity, but our advanced techniques and desensitizing agents help minimize discomfort.

Tooth Pain & Sensitivity

What can I do for tooth pain before my appointment?

Rinse gently with warm salt water, take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the package, avoid chewing on that side and use a cold compress on your cheek for swelling. Call us if the pain gets worse.

Does tooth pain always mean I need a root canal?

No. Pain can come from a cavity, a crack, gum irritation or sensitive enamel. We examine and image the tooth first, then explain the simplest treatment that will fix the cause.

Veneers

How long do dental veneers last?

With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 10–15 years or longer. Our team will provide maintenance tips to maximize their longevity.

Are dental veneers permanent?

Veneers are a long-term solution. Our dentists use a minimally invasive approach, preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.

Do veneers stain over time?

Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to stains, keeping your smile bright and white for years to come.

Are veneers right for me?

Veneers are a great choice for correcting multiple aesthetic concerns with a single treatment. During your consultation we'll help you determine if they're the best option for your smile goals.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Does everyone need their wisdom teeth removed?

No, some people's wisdom teeth will not cause complications, and therefore do not need to be removed. We'll assess yours during your exam.

What's the best age for removal?

There isn't one ideal age, but generally in the late teens. We can help you decide when the best time is for you during your exam.

Will I be asleep for the procedure?

We don't offer treatment under general anesthetic, but we do offer conscious oral sedation to help you relax. For complicated extractions we may refer you to an oral surgeon, where sleep sedation is an option.
