The natural tooth colour is between light greyish and yellow. As we get older, our teeth get naturally darker. There are many factors that can contribute to teeth discolouration and surface stains.
Factors That Can Contribute to Surface Stains and Discolouration
- As we get older, our teeth get naturally darker
- Smoking, chewing tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine
- Dental plaque and tartar deposits
- Trauma to the teeth
You can either buy teeth whitening products over-the-counter or go to your dentist for professional teeth whitening. Over-the-counter products contain weaker whitening agent. Therefore, whitening will take longer and may not be that effective. There are also numerous whitening toothpastes and chewing gums available, however their effectiveness is limited to surface stains.
The most effective and quickest treatment is professional in-office teeth whitening. The procedure takes usually around 2 hours. At the beginning your dentist will assess your teeth to determine if you are a suitable candidate for teeth whitening. If you are, the dentist will begin by isolating your teeth. Then your he/she will apply a concentrated whitening gel on your teeth and expose it to a special light to whiten and brighten your teeth. Whitening can sometimes cause sensitivity during treatment.
Teeth whitening is not a permanent solutions and your teeth might get darker again. Re-whitening treatments are simple and do not take that much time as the initial whitening session.
